One book. Made to order. Proof before print. Full refund if you don't love it.

Your photographs live on a phone. Thousands of them. Maybe tens of thousands.

You've meant to do something with them for years — a book, a slideshow, something. But the camera roll kept growing. And the photographs, for all their beauty, began to feel like a debt.

A photograph is a small piece of evidence that something happened. A memory is what you do with that evidence — the stories you tell, the object you pick up on a hard afternoon because it reminds you a soft one is coming.

Saudade is the object. A book, hand-bound, made to be kept. Where your photographs become a story someone else can hold.

THE PHOTOS EXIST. NOW THE STORY DOES TOO.

For the Keeper.

A Keeper keeps the menu from the restaurant in Rome. The ticket from the show. The leather bag they bought once and have carried for a decade. They know the word for what a place smells like when you leave it.

Keepers take photographs for the same reason they keep everything else — to hold on to the shape of something worth remembering.

If that sounds like you, this was made for you.

What it is.

Saudade is a hand-bound photo book, made to order. You send us your photographs. We design the pages in the Press Room in Chicago. We print them on archival paper, sew them into a hardcover, and stamp the cover in foil with the Saudade wordmark.

It arrives in 14 to 21 days, in a correspondence-style mailer built to be opened slowly.

It is, by design, an heirloom. Not a photo product.

The Binding

Your part is small.

The hard part is ours.

You choose

The photographs that matter. An afternoon with a glass of wine and your camera roll.

We design

The pages, the rhythm, the margins. Laid out in the Press Room. Proof sent before anything is printed.

We make

Printed, sewn, bound, foil-stamped. By hand. The Volume takes shape over weeks.

An afternoon of your time. Weeks of ours.

The Making.

Four chapters between your camera roll and your shelf.

  1. 01

    The Submission

You send us 50 to 200 photographs, in your desired order. The selection is yours. If you want help, ask — we can recommend what to cut.

  2. 02

    The Curation

We lay out every page in the Press Room in Chicago. You receive a proof of the whole Volume before anything is printed. One round of revisions is standard.

  3. 03

    The Making

Once approved, the Volume enters production. Printed on archival paper, sewn by hand, bound in your chosen cover, and foil-stamped. Fourteen to twenty-one days.

  4. 04

    The Arrival

The Volume ships in a correspondence-style mailer — parchment, ink, a hand-stamped seal. Inside, the book is tissue-wrapped alongside a letterpress manifesto card, a bonus print from your submission, and a few small gifts.

Saudade founder Noah — contemplative portrait

A note from Noah

"I started Saudade because I watched someone I loved take too long to sort through a box of photographs. The box was older than me. She remembered every face in it. But she had never been able to give the photographs back to the people in them — as a story, as an object, as something anyone else could hold.

I wanted to make a book that gave people permission to make the story — without needing to design anything themselves. The photographs are the Keeper's work. The book is mine.

Every Volume is made to order. Nothing is stocked. Each one is a one-time object, made for one person. That is the nature of the work."

Why it costs what it costs.

Not luxury pricing. Craft pricing.

The question we hear most is how we compare to the photo books a camera-roll app makes.

The alternative

≈ $60

  • Glued at the spine
  • 150gsm inkjet paper
  • Printed at a warehouse in minutes
  • Pages yellow in five years
  • Inventoried, not personal

A Saudade Volume

from $225

  • Smyth-sewn by hand, signature by signature
  • 200gsm archival paper, photograph-grade
  • Designed in Chicago by a human
  • Fifty-year color stability, rated
  • Made for one Keeper, never stocked

One is a printout. The other is a book.

We cannot make one this well for less. What you are paying for is hours — ours, not an algorithm's.

WE DO NOT DISCOUNT. EVER. THE PRICE ON THE SHELF IS THE PRICE AS MADE.

The Promise

If you unwrap your Volume and don't feel you're holding something worth keeping — we give it all back.

We don't charge for disappointment. Every Volume is made to be held for decades. If it doesn't pass that test, it shouldn't have been made.

Questions Keepers ask.

How long does it take?+

Fourteen to twenty-one days from the moment you approve the proof. Rushes are possible — ask us.

Are my photographs safe?+

Stored on encrypted servers, used only to make your Volume. Deleted on request after delivery.

Can I revise the design?+

Yes. One round of revisions is standard. Additional rounds available on request.

Do I pick the pages, or do you?+

You pick the photographs. We lay them out. You approve the proof before anything prints.

Will the colors hold up?+

Yes — for fifty-plus years. Archival-grade paper, UV-stable ink. Keep it out of direct sunlight and it will outlive you.

Do you use AI?+

No. Every page is designed by a human in the Press Room. AI does not touch your photographs.

Can I gift a Volume?+

Yes. We can keep the design confidential from the recipient and ship it directly or to you.

What if I don't have enough photographs?+

Fifty is the minimum for the Highlights format. If you have fewer, we'll tell you before you commit.

What is the size of each Volume?+

Each Volume measures approximately 9 × 12 inches. Substantial in the hand, designed to sit on a shelf with books — not photo albums.

What does shipping cost?+

A flat $14 within the United States. International shipping is calculated at checkout. Every Volume ships tracked, in our correspondence-style mailer.

What image formats do you accept?+

JPEG, PNG, and HEIC. RAW files are welcome too — we handle the conversion. Minimum resolution: 2,000 pixels on the long edge.

What if I change my mind after the proof?+

Nothing is printed until you approve the proof. If you pull out before approval, we refund every dollar.
